Are you serious?

I'm really puzzled by the topics of the Republican presidential campaign. It's about abortion, contraception, same-sex marriage, and the separation of church and state. Doesn't this country have other more serious problems? The most extreme candidate is Rick Santorum. He fights against almost every right that women and the civil rights movement have gained in the past 50 years. He also thinks global warming is fiction, and he doesn't believe in the theory of evolution. The moderate Republican, Mitt Romney, is the front runner right now. He belongs to the Mormon church, which is considered a sect in Germany. The Mormons are very conservative and believe strongly in traditional family values. Meanwhile Newt Gingrich has fallen behind. He made the ridiculous proposal to reward girls who graduate from high school while they are still virgins. 

Ich bin wirklich verwundert mit welchen Themen hier Wahlkampf gemacht wird. Es geht um Abtreibung, Verhütung, gleichgeschlechtliche Ehe und die Trennung von Staat und Kirche. Hat dieses Land keine anderen Probleme? Der extremste Kandidat ist Rick Santorum. Er wettert ungefähr gegen alles, was sich Frauen und Bürgerrechtler in den letzten 50 Jahre erkämpft haben. Er hält die Klimaerwärmung für erfunden und an die Evolutionstheorie glaubt er nicht. 

Der etwas moderatere Republikaner Mitt Romney liegt mittlerweile bei den Vorwahlen vorne. Er gehört der mormonischen Kirche an, die in Deutschland als Sekte betrachtet wird und ein sehr konservatives Rollen- und Familienbild vermittelt. Der ebenso konservative Newt Gingrich ist mittlerweile weit zurückgefallen. Am lächerlichsten fand ich seinen Vorschlag Highschool Absolventinnen für ihre Jungfräulichkeit zu belohnen. 

Winter Rain

As a German I'm actually used to nasty rain, but I've never had it rain into the house. In Northern California it seems to be common to get wet inside buildings during the rainy season. That's at least my experience. Caution–slippery!

Als Deutscher ist man ja Regen gewöhnt, aber es ist doch sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig, wenn es in die Gebäude herein regnet. In Nordkalifornien scheint das während der Regenzeit nichts Besonderes zu sein (das ist jedenfalls meine Erfahrung). Achtung, rutschig!

Safeway

Wandering through the lonely aisles of a Safeway Supermarket, I found amazing products. I guess my absolute favorite is the butter spray named "I can't believe it's not Butter." While the choice of cereals was rather overwhelming, a yogurt with a fat rate higher than 2% was not available. Very new for me was the custom of sanitizing the shopping carts handles before using them to avoid germs. And I was surprised that you could get a flu shot in a supermarket and make a donation for breast cancer research at the cash register. In the end you get your purchases packed and even delivered to your car, if you want to. That's really surprising for a German who is used to doing all the work by herself. 

Während ich durch die einsamen Gänge eines Safeways (die zweitgrößte Supermarkt Kette hier) wanderte, fand ich erstaunliche Produkte. Ich glaube mein Lieblingsprodukt ist ein Butter-Spray namens "Ich kann nicht glauben, daß es keine Butter ist". Die Auswahl an "Müslis" war einschüchternd, während das Fehlen von Joghurt mit einem anständigen Fettgehalt traurig war. Interessant fand ich auch den Brauch die Griffe der Einkaufswagen vor der Benutzung zu desinifzieren, um Keimen vorzubeugen. Ebenso wie die Tatsache, daß man im Safeway eine Grippeimpfung bekommen kann und an der Kasse beim Bezahlen für die Brustkrebsforschung spenden kann. Zu guter letzt wird einem alles schön eingepackt und, wenn man möchte, auch noch ins Auto gebracht. So werden wir in Deutschland nicht verwöhnt. 

Everything Is Big

It sounds like a cliché that things are bigger in the U.S. than in Europe, but there is something to it. When I came to the U.S. a year and a half ago, I was amazed by the extraordinary size of things: a country in XL. My experiences with the strangeness of this foreign country introduce my illustration blog. Let's see where the blog leads us. 

Es ist ein Klischee, aber es scheint etwas dran zu sein. Zumindest ist es mir am Anfang in den USA so ergangen, daß ich immer wieder über die Größe von Dingen gestaunt habe: ein Land im XL Format. Mein Staunen über die Andersartigkeit dieses für mich fremden Landes wird meinen Illustrations-Blog eröffnen. Mal sehen, wo es mich hinführen wird.
